Ecommerce in the US grew up in the second quarter of 2022

Ecommerce spending in the United States of America continued steady single-digit growth in the second quarter. The analysis released by Digitalcommerce 360 based on the figures of the U.S Department of Commerce provided more information.

This year the revenue in the second quarter reached 252.14 billion US dollars. In comparison to 2021, the growth is 7.3% (here and further, the percentage may not align precisely with the dollar amounts due to rounding). The number is modest compared to 15.4% growth year to year in 2021 and a whopping 53.5% in 2020, caused by lockdown and closing stores. Also, some impact was caused by Amazon Prime Day, moved to the third quarter.

As for the sales structure, the online share was about the same year ago - 20.6%, compared to 20.4 in 2021. Sales through all channels reached 1.22 trillion US dollars. This is a 6.2% increase compared to 1.15 trillion US dollars a year ago. This is quite insufficient, compared to 20.5% in the second quarter of 2021, but significant compared to 3.1% in 2020 and 3.5% - the average growth for the previous five years.

As for the first half of 2022, the figures are as follows:

  • Ecommerce sales reached $483.46 billion (increased by 7% compared to $451,63 in 2021);
  • Online orders share reached 20.8%;
  • Total retail sales reached $2.32 trillion (increased by 7% compared to 2.17 trillion in 2021).
